4 Big Trends in Bath Decor 2016-2017

Bathroom Décor & Accessory Trends

Here’s a sampling of 4 of the biggest trends in bath décor for 2016 that will continue onto 2017. (Two contemporary and two transitional) They mirror some of the hottest home furnishings fashion trends…handmade, worldly, utilitarian and organic looks. Overall looks are informal and textural. They are Industrial Chic, Nature Calls, In The Navy and Worldly Loo. Bathroom trends 1 revised

“Industrial Chic” is an urbane contemporary bath trend that is simple, spare and with industrial touches. Bathroom accessory shapes are utilitarian and unadorned. Materials include mixed woods and plastic. The look is neutral black and pure white, warmed up with handmade baskets, abstract organic prints and stripes on shower curtains, towels and storage.Bathroom trends 3 revised (2)

“Nature Calls” for contemporary bathrooms that are spa-like, inspired by nature and organic references. They are spare and clean, but contrasted with textural, handcrafted textiles, wood and wicker accessories. Bath accessories are modern and basic. Organic and ethic patterns are key on shower curtains, storage and towels. Colors include the continuing popular favorites, grey, porcelain white and citrine.

Bathroom trends 3 revised navy

“In the Navy” is a transitional bath trend, that is glamourous and classic. It appeals to both traditional and more modern customers. The colors are predominantly navy and pure white, but popped with a modern tangerine. Textile patterns run the gamut from symmetrical stripes, ethnic and geometric patterns. Accessories gleam in clear glass and silver metal.Bathroom trends 4 revised“Worldly Loo” is a warm, transitional bath trend rooted in handcrafted, textural and natural materials. The color story is neutral, but the contrast of textures is serene and livable. Patterns include handcrafted ethnic patterns and stripes. Bath accessory materials include ceramic, stone, rattan, grasses and wood.

Color Trends 2016/2017 Going Green

The green color family is trending for spring 2016/17.

The green color family is trending for spring 2016/17.

It’s time for change. Green is the color of renewal and rebirth. Going green is a huge fashion color trend for spring 2016/2017. Especially alluring is lady-like, retro pistachio, my vote for color of the season. Also important are rich emerald, olive, dried basil and deep-woods green.

Olives are highly versatile classic neutrals. They are important for safari and military inspired looks and make perfect foils for a range of colors. They pair well with reds, yellows, oranges, pinks, blues and  purples. Olives looks especially sophisticated with the fashionable ultra-pales.

The olives will be key anchors for bottoms, outerwear, tops, shoes and bags. Emerald and pistachio sing on active, tops, career, dresses, accessories, swim and lingerie.

4 Hot Home Decor Trends for 2016-2017

There are four big trends in home textiles and hard home for 2016-2017. I call them “Craft”, “World View”, “Fresh Take” and “Silver Mining”.

Consumers value things that are authentic and have a sense of handcrafted individuality in an tech-obsessed world. These tactile, handmade, hand-embroidered, washed and deconstructed, bed linens, decorative pillows, throws, rugs and towels provide grounding, in a world filled with man-made anxiety. This crafted aesthetic carries over into storage baskets, lamps, vases, mirrors, trays and other hard home décor accessories.

In general home textiles are more casual in material or spirit, less refined and flat. Big soft home trends include “luxe-casual”, the combination of luxurious fabrics or materials combined in casual prints or with rustic weaves; copious textural mixing, embroidery, novelty decoration such as beading or applique and voluminous oversized knitting.

Important colors include the neutral white and ivories, pastels emerge, especially purples and pink, a full spectrum of blues and the continuance of grey as a key color for livable master bedrooms and baths.

Patterns include ethnic prints and geometrics, embroideries and tie-dye in casual, washed fabrics or rich, high-count textiles; sweet flower prints, floral embroideries and menswear looks.

Fabrics are dominated by casual natural 100% cotton, linen, rustic wools and mohair.

I expect these hot home textile and décor trends will continue well into 2017.

Flaming Hot – Warm Color Trend in Home & Fashion

Go from the frying pan into the fire. Flaming hot maraschino, tomato, mandarin and pumpkin colors are trending in home décor and fashion accessories for fall 2015. These in-your-face, sizzling shades are creating fashion flare-ups everywhere they go.

This powerful fall color trend is best used in small does for maximum effect. In home furnishings warm, bright colors are on pillows, sheets, towels, lamps, rugs, vases, tabletop, etc. They add a playful pop and seasonal update to neutral rooms and tablescapes. They look especially good when paired with greys. clean white and navy.

Warm colors add serious pop to home décor and fall 2015 fashion.

Hot, bright colors say uber-sexy or athletic, like no others, on fashion accessories or apparel. A red-hot handbag, pair of shoes, lingerie, dress, puffer, jean, top or nail color has the power to steal scenes. Again, restraint is key here, overdoing can send you down in fashion flames. Pair best with neutrals, denim, navy and black.

Warm up to the sexy, sultry colors of spring/summer 2015 in endless shades of coral, pink, orange and red. These uber-feminine shades make scene stealers out of life’s understudies. This fashion trend is what impulse purchases and standing o’s are made of.

Hot shots of color take center stage on dresses, tops, jeans, active, swimwear, lingerie, shoes, sandals, handbags and accessories. They look especially modern paired in tonal combinations, accented with white or light neutral browns, to avoid an epic sugar rush.

Most notable shades are impatien coral, ripe tomato, begonia, juicy pink and blush. Expect this salable color trend to do an encore in 2016 apparel and footwear collections.

Street Smarts – Red Hot Athletic Style

It is survival of the fittest in the urban jungle. Fitness is power. Women are increasingly turning to power workouts such as CrossFit, strength training and boxing. There is also an empowering trend in athletic apparel. It is urban inspired, edgy and sexy. I call it Street Smarts.

The lines are blurred between what was once strictly apparel for the gym and casual sportswear. Men and women are mixing the two in a sporty mélange that goes in and out of the gym. “Athleisure” is the new normal in casual; because it is comfortable, durable and empowering. Lululemon and Under Armour were the birth parents, but now it’s pervasive.

Edgy, urban styling is trending in athletic apparel.

Edgy, urban styling is trending in athletic apparel.

Street Smarts mixes lounging tomboy with hormone-charged bad girl. It is feminine and masculine. Think retro boxing gym.

Body conscious leggings and comfy sweats are the key bottoms. Look for “townie bad boy” outerwear like hoodies and baseball jackets. Important details on tops are radical back interest, sheer and mesh insets. Knit dresses are a key element of Street Smarts worn with leggings. Neoprene, metallics and zipper details add a structured, modern city touch.

Graphics include assertive text and smoky abstract prints. Footwear includes high-top and retro sneakers and combat boots, such as Dr. Marten’s. Backpacks, retro gym bags, baseball caps and headbands complete the look.

The color is grounded by sooty black, heather greys and white, but can be popped with an extroverted color like hot pink or citrine or softened with a pastel like blush or lilac.

Blue Color Worker Spring/Summer 2015

Looking at 25″ of snow outside, I’m big-time craving the blue skies of spring and summer 2015. One consolation is that we will be seeing a lot of blue in fashion over the next few months. The “Blue Color Worker” is the backbone of America in deepest navy, Air Force blue, royal, periwinkle, tender baby and blue tint.

The perennial favorite color will be front and center in fashion on everything from handbags, tops, sweaters, dresses, jeans, outerwear, active apparel, accessories, swimwear, shoes, etc. There will be a range of denim washes from light to very dark as well as solid dyed twills.

As MVP of the color spectrum, it can morph sharply nautical, softly sensual or boho seventies. Versatile blue is a power player, the king of casual and an intoxicating pastel.

Pair blues tonally or use navy as a neutral foil against bright primaries, such as navy and citrusy yellow. Navy with tinted pastels are chic and sexy. Combine the spectrum of blues with shades of grey, khaki or optic white.

Blue is the hardest working color family for spring/summer 2015.

Sweet Things – Fall Fashion Power Trend

The pleasure of fashion is the ability to transport the wearer and captivate the observer. Fashion is a game, played well, by a scarce few who understand its incredible power.  Fashion choices can help one transcend mere mortal status. Think of the ability of black leather to dominate, a Navy uniform to officiate or all white to glamorize.

Nothing is so sensual, so alluring, so downright sexy as the “Sweet Things” trending in fall fashion. These girly, fitted, ruffly, lacy, pleated, cropped, sheer, sequined and embellished items have the ability to bring men to their knees.  Women get caught in their emotional web and can’t resist the impulse. Think legal nudity.

Power trend: Sweet and sexy blush items for fall.

Power trend: Sweet and sexy blush items for fall.

Most often, these trouble-making tops, dresses, handbags, shoes, sweaters, active wear, bras, panties and skirts are in delicate shades of blush pink.  Look for these delicate colors in beauty lines, as well.

Caution, there can be too much of a good thing. Wear them tonally or in single servings. Pair sweet pieces with edgier ones like jeans or leather jacket. Pair with grey, navy or maroon. Head-to-toe blush pink can lead to a matronly sugar rush.

Look to Herve Lerger, Ted Baker, Tory Burch, Club Monaco, BCBG, Zara, La Perla, Athleta, etc. for some of the best Sweet Things.

Fall 2014 Color Trend- Grape Escape

Purple is a color with multiple personalities. It’s fans include a huge range, hipsters, outdoor geeks and the hottest of hot femme fatales. Purple  has a rebellious streak and is the color of royalty. Not to mention, it flatters just about everyone and is endlessly feminine. This powerhouse color is taking a walk on the red-casted side for fall 2014 and will continue for 2015.

Look for soft tender and dusty lilac, purple rose, red grape and the deepest red plum in sexy lingerie, athletic wear, dresses, tops, sweaters, jeans, outerwear, handbags, accessories, jewelry and shoes. These godly shades are fabulous paired tonally, with grey, olive, navy, pinks and berries.
